The Town of St. James was established in 1999 after the creation of the large master-planned community of St. James Plantation in 1991. It's located minutes from Southport and many properties in St. James Plantation are technically in the seaside city. St. James is also 46 minutes from Wilmington, NC, and about an hour from N. Myrtle Beach, SC.
While the
property owners association manages much of the town buildings and infrastructure, the
Town of St. James handles emergency management services (including the fire department and EMS), yard debris removal, animal control (with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office), fiscal management, ordinances and regulations, and town planning, zoning, and tax revenue management.
The residents of St. James enjoy four golf courses, state-of-the art fitness facilities, multiple indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis and pickleball courts, a full
service marina, and a beach club on Oak Island. The community also has walking trails, playgrounds, gardens, and parks, including dog parks. Plus, there is an endless list of clubs and activities for residents to join.
While St. James has made multiple "Where to Retire" lists, it's home to people from all stages of life. It has also earned national recognition for its quality golf courses, clubs, and boating facilities.
