Rocky Point, NC, is a small unincorporated area located on Highways 210 and 133, and U.S. Route 117 in southern Pender County. It’s best known by locals for being home to Paul’s Place Famous Hot Dogs, an area staple that many remember fondly as being the go-to family restaurant along one of the busiest routes that existed before I-40 was completed. Now, Rocky Point is growing with homes and is the destination for home buyers who want to have larger lots and a touch of the country life while remaining just 20 minutes from Wilmington’s shopping, dining, and entertainment.
As it becomes increasingly rare to find new construction communities in Wilmington boasting ½ acre lots or larger, Rocky Point has become popular with home buyers who want to work with area builders. They can get brand new homes at a reasonable price, some even in water access communities, while giving themselves so extra space from neighbors. Of course, there’s plenty of land in the Rocky Point area to allow buyers the opportunity to build a custom home and live outside of a traditional neighborhood, but for those who want a neighborhood structure, there are options.
For buyers who want to do some farming or have a little homestead, Rocky Point is a great place to look. The landscape is a mix of trees and fields, and family farmers grow a range of plants from corn to strawberries to peanuts. Horses are common, as well as chicken, cows, and pigs (but in no large terms).
Rocky Point does not have a large commercial area, but it is home to some businesses that fulfill the needs of daily life, like a grocery store, tractor supply company, auto parts store, hardware store, pharmacy, and a small assortment of fast food and locally-owned restaurants, to name a few. While there are some excellent trade businesses in Rocky Point, it’s common for people to buy in this area and commute south to more urban city of Wilmington or north to the slightly larger town of Burgaw.
