Learn more about Boiling Spring Lakes
Boiling Spring Lakes is a small city located in Brunswick County, NC, between Southport and Winnabow. It was established in 1961. At its center is a 275-acre lake (“Big Lake”), one of over 50 natural and man-made in this area. The city received its name due to these bodies of water, as well as a single fresh water spring (“Bouncing Log Spring”) discovered by area developers in its earliest years. It is since understood that Big Lake is fed by five springs and Allen Creek, which is part of a network linked to the Cape Fear River.
In 2018, Hurricane Florence dropped 20-30 inches of rain on an already saturated Southeastern North Carolina, which led to flooding that overwhelmed the dams in Boiling Spring Lakes. When the dams broke, some of the lakes were drained. That’s why visitors may see fields of vegetation. The city is still working on fixing the dams and restoring the lakes. This may take years to complete.
Boiling Spring Lakes has primarily small locally-owned restaurants, shops, and services. Additional shopping and dining options are available in Southport (10 mins), Leland (20 mins), and Wilmington (30 mis). It’s also just 16 minutes from the beach on Oak Island.
