If you're looking for a quiet luxury estate, Hampstead, NC, is the best place to start your search. This rural setting provides more land and privacy to area residents than newer construction in Wilmington, but it's only 15 minutes outside the city so the shopping, dining, and entertainment is still within close proximity.
While the town center falls on US-17, one side of the Hampstead area borders the Intracoastal Waterway, so many of the luxury homes are waterfront properties with private boat slips or docks and piers. Home owners can walk out their back door right to their boat and cruise up the coast to Topsail Island for lunch or down the coast to Wrightsville Beach for dinner. It's convenience without the higher price tag!
Hampstead is also a prime location for anyone wanting a private barn or stable. Larger lots and tracts of land allow room for building barns, stables, paddocks, etc. There are also equestrian communities where all of the residents pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the common facilities. When you own a horse, it's an incredible pleasure to have them within walking distance.
Although Hampstead is considered rural, it has three golf courses. Olde Point Golf Course & Country Club and Belvedere Country Club are traditional coastal golf courses with native plants and trees. Castle Bay Country Club is a classic Scottish links style with lots of dunes and very few trees. All have different levels of play, so a change of venue requires a change in game. For even more options, there are two more golf courses just 15 minutes away in Wilmington - The Tom Fazio Golf Course at Porters Neck Plantation and Eagle Point Golf Club, which hosted the PGA Tour.
