Did you know that Amazon has a new portal for products that are carbon neutral and part of the Climate Pledge Friendly program? It’s called Amazon Aware, and it’s one way you know you are purchasing products that will positively impact the environment while shopping on their website. The products include items from the categories clothing, beauty, household essentials, and bed and bath – all items we use in our daily lives.

To be considered part of Amazon Aware, each product must earn a specific Climate Pledge Friendly certificate relevant to its product type. For example, beauty products receive the EWG Verified certificate, which verifies they “are free from EWG’s known chemicals of concern and adhere to strict health standards.” Bedding receives the Global Organic Textile Standard certificate, which confirms each “step of the organic textile supply chain” meets “strict ecological and social standards”. Shoppers can see which certificates each product earns by clicking on the Climate Pledge Friendly logo on the product details page. Many have earned more than one.
In addition to the Climate Pledge Friendly certificates, ClimatePartner measures the carbon footprint of all Amazon Aware products to verify they are carbon neutral. That means any carbon emitted through the creation, delivery, or disposal of the product is offset in other areas of the product’s lifespan, so it has a net neutral impact on the environment. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that has been found to have a major negative impact on the Earth and is part of the reason why average temperatures worldwide are increasing, causing rising sea levels and extreme weather.
Amazon is a convenient shopping option for many people, but the effects it has had on the environment have been awful, largely in part due to packaging, the carbon emissions from delivery trucks, and the energy costs of powering Amazon Web Services (AWS), which hosts many popular websites, like Netflix, Facebook, and ESPN. However, the company is taking steps to be net-zero carbon by 2040, including switching to electric vehicles, reducing air and materials in packaging, and using renewable energy to power their facilities. Amazon Aware and Climate Pledge Friendly is their effort to encourage sellers to also become carbon neutral and environmentally friendly.
