Learn more about Winnabow

Winnabow, North Carolina, is an unincorporated area west of Wilmington and south of Leland in Brunswick County. It’s a rural area made up of mainly forest and farm land that’s dotted with remnants of wars past. Tucked away in its trees is Brunswick Town, which was built during the Revolutionary War, razed, and then built over as Fort Anderson during the Civil War.

Despite what appears to be an advantageous military location, Winnabow has remained quiet and undeveloped. Only in the past decade have new communities begun popping up near the Leland border, where the population is growing quickly. While looking at homes for sale, buyers often don’t notice when they pass between the two areas.

In addition to being a short drive from the growing commercial areas of Leland, Winnabow is a convenient 25 minutes from the charming town of Southport and 15 minutes from culturally-rich downtown Wilmington. Area beaches, no matter which way you go – towards Caswell Beach in Brunswick County or Wrightsville Beach in New Hanover County – are just 30 minutes away. For a whole other source of fun, Myrtle Beach, SC, is a little over 1 hour away, so there’s plenty of options for entertainment.

Winnabow is located in the Brunswick County School District. For more info on class size, performance, and demographics, view the school information section below. For higher education, there are multiple options. Brunswick Community College has 3 campuses in Brunswick County and 1 is on Enterprise Drive in Leland. Additionally, Leland is a short drive from Cape Fear Community College in downtown Wilmington. A little bit longer drive takes residents to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington . All 3 schools are fine choices for higher learning.
